Obafemi Awolowo University was founded in 1961 when chief Obafemi Awolowo was serving as the premier of the Western region. It was formerly known as “University of Ife” but was renamed on 12th of May, 1987 in honour of Chief Obafemi Awolowo. It is located along Ife-Ibadan expressway Ile-Ife Osun state Nigeria. £250 was used for the take off of the University. Ile-Ife campus was built on about 5000 acres of land out of 13000 acres of land the school owned.

Obafemi Awolowo University has all it takes to be called”Africa most beautiful campus”. It has the best lecturers, and the students have access to tools that makes learning easier for them for example students have access to books in the library either hard copy or soft copy and free access to internet and it was recorded as at 2019 that the school always use one gigabyte in one seconds.

In 1962, 244 students were admitted and the first vice chancellor of the school is Prof.Oladele Ajose and as at 1962 , the university had six faculties which are ; Agriculture, Art, Economics and Social studies, Law, and Science. As at 2019 the population of students in the school is 35000.

Obafemi Awolowo University was changed into federal university in 1975 during a military regime and this increased the school faculty from six to thirteen and two colleges ( college of Health sciences and Post graduate college). Students are admitted into any field of specialization such as Humanities, Arts, Natural sciences , Social sciences Medical sciences, Engineering and Technology.

Obafemi Awolowo University is the leading Information And Communication Technology(ICT) University with a bandwidth of 113 Mbit/s. Its health centre is well equipped no wonder the first Siamese twins to be separated in Sub Saharan Africa was carried out at it’s teaching hospital. Its sport centre provides both Indoor and outdoor sports and it is well equipped.

The University hall of residence is built far away from the academic area. Its hall of residence are; Awolowo hall, Angola hall, Alumni, ETF, Fajuyi, Akintola, Moremi, Mozambique and Murtala Mohammed which is for post graduate.

Obafemi Awolowo University has many great alumni but to mention a few; Pastor Enoch Adeboye, Ibukun Awosika, Femi Falana, Femi Otedola, Femi Adesina, Fireboy DML, Dele Momodu, Chinko Ekun, Olusegun Mimiko.

Its students are fond of calling it Oba Awon University or Ogba Femi.
